a list of desires.
of pages, to establish relationships with new chapters, bound to them just as how their pages are bound to each other. And then, to unravel the world under their skin. My bookshelves scream their thirst at night. Everything on them is dated, and exhausted from having dated only each other. Everyday I itch to go out just only to read in different locations. But frankly I have no money for books now… and with my added holidays, that is the most tragic thing I can write. With all my free time I can only compose helpless lists like these:
File Under ‘Desire To Attain By Almost Any Means Necessary’ (in no order)
- we, yevgeny zamyatin
the accidental, ali smith- crush, richard siken (which I’m told isn’t even available in this country, sob)
we need to talk about kevin, lionel shriversnow, orhan pamuk- out: a novel, natsuo kirino
- the secret of lost things, sheridan hay
- lost echoes, joe lansdale
- chasing che: a motorcycle journey in search of the guevara legend, patrick symmes
- veronica, nicholas christopher
- wizard of the crow, ngugi wa’thiong’o
- poppy shakespeare, clare allan
snakes & earrings, hitomi kanehara- zazie in the metro, raymond queneau
theft, peter carey- the solitude of thomas cave, georgina harding
- only revolutions, mark z danielewski
- half of a yellow sun, chimamanda ngozi adichie
- proof: a play, david auburn
- the book of lost things, john connolly
- horrific sufferings of the mind-reading monster hercules barefoot: his wonderful love & terrible hatred, carl-johan vallgren
how late it was, how late, james kelmankite runner, khaled hosseinithe woman who waited, andrei makine- free food for millionaires, min jin lee
- the sorrows of young werther, goethe
- thousand cranes, yasunari kawabata
- austerlitz, w.g. sebald
- big sur, jack kerouac
- the true history of chocolate, sophie coe
- cat’s cradle, kurt vonnegut
- postsecret: extraordinary confessions from ordinary lives, frank warren
I should start listing down all my books again, like in the first version of faeries in my coffee so many years ago.
If bookstore owners were to open up their hunger like rockstars
I would apply wit, makeup, and move on in immediately.
in our affair, we’d autograph the first pages of all our gorgeous offspring.
(if you have recommendations, please stir them over this way. I could always use an extra piece of grief.)

[…] Short note: Jubilations! (first time I ever used that word actually) I managed to strike a few books from my list after hitting a certain bookstore in BSC last night. It’s large but tragically stocked. It was a miracle I could find any of the books listed. Classics & poetry share a measly shelf surrounded by a flood of children’s books (at this point, you can hear me solemnly vow under my breath never to return). It doesn’t help that when I asked for Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary, they gave me Penguin’s Dictionary of Philosophy. But points for stocking a book my second-last ex stole from me (welcome home). And I rejoice anyway with the new blood to keep me company. No more rereading, no more bookhunger (for maybe the next 3 weeks). Back to work. […]

I’ve read some Murakami, although that was so long ago. I should reread him. but I’m not interested in rereading at the moment. I’ll look up those other three books thank you!

ha! so more people make lists like that (though mine are more fragmented: in notebooks, on scraps of paper, the back of receipts…).
my contribution to your grief:
an empty room (talitha stevenson)
norwegian wood (haruki murakami…hell, anything by haruki murakami)
the gravity of sunlight (rosa shand)
my name is sei shonagon (jan blensdorf)
…let me know if you want some more^^.

I did have a librarything account, and had a grand time with it… until I maxed out and they told me I had to pay to add more book titles to my library. Sigh.

Erm, have you used http://www.librarything.com/ before? It makes cataloging sooo easy!
