V for Vision

wish upon the light at the end of the tunnel

A few hours ago I was driving through a tunnel, Matt told me to hold my breath and make a wish at the end of it.

In the long stretch of hole in the hill, I wanted to wish for time. But settling for the slightly-less-impossible, I went for identity.
It was a self-indulgent wish, no world peace or environmental renaissance.
I just wanted to always have a clear sense of who I am and who I’ll be when I grow up. I wished it for everyone I could wish for. If we have that then everything we do will be worth it. No matter how tangled, we’ll come through, Jiminy Crickets attached.

but I say sir, the sense of effective protection is entirely self-granted

We went to watch V For Vendetta, which was left me happy & satisfied. V always was my favourite letter and sound in the alphabet; so many lovely words in there that are lovely in secret and go unnoticed. I delightfully observed two things.

  • 1. that the protagonist’s primary portrayal was as a champion of ideas. many movies make senseless overdone trite of the whole mask theme but for once this was tastefully pulled off.
  • 2. that there wasn’t a lot of censorship (ordinarily just a breath of the few underlying themes in the story would have been snipped by the Malaysian board just as how Daredevil did not merit screening due to its shockingly untranslate-able name).

I hope they don’t change their mind and whip out their scissors… it would be madly ironic since the underlying theme to the film is mockery to the mantra “For Your Own Protection” (i.e, resistance to government control).
